{"id":241,"date":"2012-10-22T09:32:46","date_gmt":"2012-10-22T16:32:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/debbiepetrina.authorsxpress.com\/?p=241"},"modified":"2022-02-28T19:10:16","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T19:10:16","slug":"multiple-sclerosis-what-everyone-needs-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/debbiepetrina.com\/?p=241","title":{"rendered":"Multiple Sclerosis: What EVERYONE Needs to Know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cPeople just don\u2019t know about it.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">October 22, 2012<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are two things many people say that irks those of us that have Multiple Sclerosis:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt\u2019s that Jerry Lewis thing, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cBut you look so good!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">No, it\u2019s NOT that Jerry Lewis thing.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jerry Lewis represents MD\u2014Muscular Dystrophy.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">MS stands for Multiple Sclerosis. Two extremely different disorders.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As we MSers talk to each other, we get discouraged that MD has had a national figure representing and fundraising for them.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We wish we had a national well-known person that could do the same thing for multiple sclerosis.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So many people are not\u00a0<em>aware<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> of MS.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nor do they\u00a0<em>understand<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If people really understood MS, they would know not to say \u201cBut you look so good!\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We would like to respond back \u201cThanks, but we sure don\u2019t <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">feel<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> as good as we look!\u201d<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Why?<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Because multiple sclerosis is largely an <em>invisible <\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">disorder.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">People automatically associate MS with walking problems and wheelchairs. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Being a disease of the central nervous system, potentially anything controlled by the CNS can be affected:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">sensory functions, sight, cognitive\/emotional functions\u2014in <em>addition <\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">to motor functions. These MS symptoms are not only invisible; they are extremely common and very disabling. Some examples include fatigue, weakness, bladder\/bowel\/sexual problems, numbness and tingling sensations, loss of sensation, balance\/coordination issues, loss of vision, pain, dizziness, depression; the list is enormous. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Someone who understands MS would also know the detrimental effect any type of heat has on a MSer, whether it\u2019s from the temperature, a fever, the time of day or a hot flash.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Or that staggered walking is not from too many drinks, but rather from a loss of balance\/coordination due to damage in the brain. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Also, since many symptoms are invisible, many people do not realize that someone may have MS.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Or, because they don\u2019t see a cane, brace, or other disability device, it is assumed that a MSer is okay.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is hurtful to get dirty looks and remarks when a \u201cnormal-looking\u201d person with MS gets out of the car in a handicapped space; their ability to walk before their legs start to wobble may be just ten minutes or 100 steps.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So, <em>both<\/em> awareness and understanding are needed.<span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To survive MS, we need a tremendous amount of support, not only from our friends and family, but from everybody.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Physical, mental, emotional and financial support.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Support for us individually due the difficulties and disabilities we live with; and support for the MS community as a whole<em> financially<\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;to fund research for curing MS, preventing MS, and restoring lost function due to its damaging effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I started an Orange Ribbon campaign recently with the Arizona Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We MSers and some of our friends and families have just about finished 5,500 orange ribbon pins that represent multiple sclerosis (like the pink ones that stand for breast cancer).<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our goal is to have them ready for distribution at the Phoenix MS Walk on November 3<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: x-small;\">rd<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We want to create more awareness, and when strangers ask us \u201cwhat\u2019s that orange ribbon for?\u201d we will explain MS.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We will be advocators and educators.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So if you see someone wearing an orange ribbon on their lapel or shirt, it means either they have MS or someone that they know has MS.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We make them ourselves using orange satin floral ribbon and safety pins.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">During one of our ribbon-making sessions, a woman asked \u201cWhat do you say when someone asks what MS is?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is complicated and difficult to explain.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Keeping it simple and uncomplicated, I would suggest this:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What is Multiple Sclerosis?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Multiple Sclerosis is disease of the central nervous system. Potentially anything controlled by the CNS can be affected&#8211;such as motor function, sensory function, sight, or cognitive\/emotional functions.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many symptoms are invisible, so many people don\u2019t know someone has MS. (Examples: fatigue, weakness, bladder problems, numbness\/tingling, pain\u2026)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is not fatal, contagious, or congenital.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There is no cure; the cause is unknown.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is generally progressive.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The majority of persons afflicted will become disabled during the decades of their lifetime with no way to fix the damage.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Every case of MS is different, unpredictable, and very uncontrollable. It is unknown what course the disease will take, what will be affected, how quickly it will happen, and how much disability will occur.<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are new drugs that are trying to slow the progression, and meds to help relieve symptoms and shorten relapses.
